His legal career began as a Misdemeanor Prosecutor in 2006 at the Travis County Attorney's Office in Austin. He handled all misdemeanor charges with a focus on Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) trials. Brandon was promoted to Court Chief by the Travis County Attorney assuming responsibility for managing daily court dockets, jury trial dockets, and other prosecutors assigned to his court.
In 2008 he was hired by the Travis County District Attorney as a Felony Prosecutor. He served for more than eight years in the Family Justice, Trial Court, and Strategic Prosecution Divisions. Brandon handled some of the most serious cases including murder and aggravated robbery in the Family Justice Division, where he was assigned to Juvenile Court. In the Trial Court Division, Brandon was assigned to various Criminal District Courts where he saw felony cases through from indictment to jury trial in suits ranging from drug possession to murder. In the Strategic Prosecution Division, he managed filing and handling all state civil asset forfeitures filed in Travis County.
When questions arose in 2015 concerning the reliability of certain DNA mixture interpretation results, Brandon was assigned by the District Attorney to assist in monitoring and assessing the potential impact to Travis County felony criminal cases. He was recognized for his efforts by the Texas Forensic Science Commission in a 2016 audit report detailing additional issues specific to the APD DNA Lab, which eventually ceased operations.
